Frederick M. "Fred" Finnen II, age 63 of Owosso passed away Sunday, October 16, 2016 at Memorial Healthcare.
Funeral Services will be held 11am Thursday October 20, 2016 at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Cal Emerson officiating. The family will receive friends at Nelson-House Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm.
Fred was born in Lancaster, Ohio to Fred and Jennie Rose (Hickman) Finnen.
He attended school in Zanesville and Cambridge, Ohio and then was accepted to Muskingum College in 1971 but shortly after he was drafted into the United States Army and proudly served his country from October 1972 to May 1978. He continued on his education and was a graduate of Central Ohio Technical College in Newark, Ohio with an Associates Degree.
Fred married Sarah Braby on August 9, 1975.
Fred worked with various groups in the community; the Homeless Coalition, Health and Human Services, the Salvation Army and the Zoning and Planning Commission in Hillsdale. He also was a Kiwanis member and officer serving as Secretary and President. Fred also served as the Treasurer of Osburn Lakes subdivision for several years. On February 22, 2016 he had recently become a board member for Shiawassee County Community Mental Health. Fred was proud of his community and loved seeing Owosso thrive. He ran for Mr. Owosso in 2009 and raised over $16,000 for the Shiawassee Council on Aging.
The Finnen family spent over 50 years of summer vacations at the cottage in Bay View, Michigan called Cuddledoon which became near and dear to their hearts. It quickly became a haven for the family to relax. Fred treasured the time spent at Cuddledoon and all of the memories that the family made.
Fred worked for Kroger since he was 16 years old and retired after 40 years after being employed at 33 various locations in Ohio and Michigan. After his retirement from Kroger he served as the Veterans Affairs Director for 1 1/2 years.
Fred is survived by his wife; his mother; his daughter Daphne Finnen of Marietta, Georgia; his son Fred Dan Finnen III of Owosso; sisters Carol Smith of Zanesville, Ohio, Penny (Fred) Dilley of Cambridge, Ohio, and Pat (Maureen) Finnen of Lexington, Ohio; seven nieces and nephews; and many other loving family and friends.
He was predeceased by his father.
